Throughout most of Canada, including all urban areas and most rural areas, the telephone number used to reach emergency services is 911. This applies to all emergencies: police, fire, accident and medical. When travelling in rural areas, it is wise to check in a local telephone book or guide to ensure that 911 is the correct emergency contact. When in doubt, dial "0" for the operator and your call will be directed accordingly. It should be noted that ambulance fees are not covered under Canadian health care, except by private insurance policies. Please ensure that your travel insurance medical policy covers this expense.

In the event that a passport is either lost or stolen, contact the nearest consulate for the country of issue. In most cases, a temporary passport will be issued.
