Clayburn Village Clayburn Village was the first company town built in British Columbia. The village was built around the Clayburn brick factory founded by Charles Maclure in 1905 after he found good quality fire clay on Sumas Mountain. The village also had three stores, a bank and a church. The village still stands and has been designated as a Heritage Conservation area. It is located 5 km (3 mi) northeast of Abbotsford. Fraser River Heritage Park Visited regularly by residents of the area because of its beauty, this park often hosts community activities including weekly concerts in the summer. Trethewey House Heritage Site & Matsqui-Sumas-Abbotsford (MSA) Museum This house, built by baron J.O. Tretheway, has been restored to 1925 with period rooms. On the main floor there are exhibits telling the story of the first (the Sto:lo people) and subsequent peoples to pioneer the land. Othello Tunnels Located in the Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park, Othello Tunnels (often known as Quintette Tunnels) is a group of five tunnels designed by Andrew McCullough to avoid having the train travel around the canyon. They were built in 1914 and the view for sightseers from here is worth the trip. The walkways have been converted from the trestles of another time and are located about 5 km (3 mi) from Hope. Haney House Haney House was built by Thomas Haney for his family in the late 1800s. It sits in what used to be a town called Port Haney (now part of Maple Ridge), founded by the Haneys. The historic house and orchard gardens have been restored and are open on Wednesdays and Sundays from 1 pm to 4 pm. Hours are extended in the summer months. The Power House at Stave Falls offers an exciting all-ages experience, with interactive games and historic displays that tell the story of how power helped build the province. Hope Slide On January 9th in 1965 one of the largest slides in Canadian history happened in the early morning killing four people. It was the southwestern slope of Johnson Peak that became 47 million cubic metres of debris. It was 85 metres thick. It is 18 km (11 mi) southeast of Hope or 15 minutes away. Kilby Historic Site Open from May to September, this historic site was once the activity centre for Harrison Mills. Kilby has a unique architecture because it was built to survive annual flooding. Visit the General Store and hotel rooms and see photos of Harrison Mills dating back to the 1920s. Kilby Historic Site sits near the mouth of the Harrison River. Tours are welcome.
