Welcome to Mission, British Columbia

The inception of Mission was an interesting one. In the year of 1891, the bulk of the town's commercial properties and residential streets were auctioned off at the "Great Land Sale", attracting buyers and residents from as far away as Ontario. Only one year later, the town was incorporated. Then, forced by the Great Flood of 1894, the whole core was relocated just north into the hills. Today, much of the city remains concealed amongst the hillsides and gullies on the southern slope of the Coast Mountains, setting it apart from the other Fraser Valley municipalities that dot the valley floor. It's this unique location that Mission is now known for. Located only 70 km (43 mi) east of Vancouver and connected to the GVRD via the West Coast Express commuter rail, the city blends metropolitan living with a secluded, rural setting. Explore Mission and discover Power House at Stave Falls, one of the earliest Hydroelectric dams; Xaytem Longhouse, the site of the oldest dwelling yet found in British Columbia; and Westminster Abby, home of the Benedictine monks.
