Maple Ridge at a Glance
For more than a century, the pastoral community of Maple Ridge has sat at the
shores of the rolling Fraser River, below British
Columbia's towering Coast
Mountains. In the past, this location and its coastal climate made the area
ideal for an agricultural settlement founded on forestry. More recently though,
Maple Ridge has been moving away from its rural roots and adopting a more urban
attitude. The city is expanding rapidly. It joined the Greater
Vancouver Regional District in 1995 and stood as the area's fastest growing
community for more than a decade afterwards. This is a city of both natural splendor
and modern convenience; it is a mecca of adventure, featuring miles of trails,
lakes and parks; it's a progressive community with a state-of-the-art leisure
complex, library, gallery and performing arts centre; and it's a year-round centre
of festivals like the Jazz and Blues Festival, Maple Ridge Fair and the Santa
Claus Parade. All of this and only 45 km (30 mi) east of Vancouver,
30 minutes from Mission and 40 minutes from Abbotsford.
